The making of Ronny G Designs

Ronny G Designs was developed out of my love for art, travel, and the overall enjoyment of the creative process. It’s amazing to see how artisans abroad create amazing functional and aesthetic pieces with things we would throw away.  It was in Ghana that I fell in love with the vibrant cloths and tried my hand at stamping adinkra symbols to make batik and tie dyed fabrics.  I stood in awe as my host mother and host sister took my measurements to create dresses from the fabric I purchased at the market.  They worked with such ease and skill without using the patterns I was familiar with back home.   In Guatemala, I watched artisans embroider garments and weave textiles on the loom. They continue to pass these traditions on to their children at very early ages.

In a world that is so heavily saturated with computer technology, it is refreshing to see that people are still making things by hand.  For me, making things by hand is therapeutic, fun, and I love the creative challenge. For many years I tried my hand at drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry making, greeting card design and found it to be deeply satisfying.  I enjoyed what I made and I would give it away to brighten someone's day. Other times I sold them to make some extra money.

I envisioned having my own gift shop.  I tried many times but with the interruptions that life brings, it seemed like I would never get my idea off the ground.  I would quit and throw up my hands.  The passion to create would return all over again.  Sometimes the passion was triggered by a television show on PBS; a travel or arts program. Other times I would find that inspiration just by going on vacation and stopping at a crafts market. I have such admiration and respect for the men and women who heavily rely on their handicrafts in order to survive.  I decided to give it another go with the encouragement of friends, colleagues, and family.  I'm thoroughly enjoying the journey.  Thank you for being a part of it!!

  • I had the good fortune to stop by the Ronny G Designs booth at a local fair. It was an exhibit that featured designers from a wide variety of countries and cultures. Ronny carefully explained how each artist uses a different medium to create unique pieces. Her enthusiasm and knowledge about each piece demonstrates how much she cares about her customers as well as the artists she supports. This is truly a business that uplifts the culture and the people. There were so many beautiful pieces to select from. I chose the men’s cow one stretch bracelet for my husband. He loves it!
