The art of making jewelry with telephone wire began in the 1960s in South Africa’s Kwazulu Natal region. Using traditional weaving techniques laborers and night watchman would take leftover copper wire and wrap it around their nightsticks or personal items.
Over time, Zulu women expanded on the craft making elaborate baskets and jewelry out of discarded or leftover telephone wire.
